A refugee is a person who meets the requirements for being granted protection (asylum) in Norway.

In some applications for family immigration for spouses, cohabitants and for those who are getting married, both the persons must have turned 24 years old.

If you were granted family immigration on the basis of a family member who has refugee status in Norway, you can also apply for refugee status. This is called "derived refugee status".

UDI implements the government’s immigration and refugee policy. UDI processes applications pursuant to the Immigration and Nationality Acts and is the responsible agency in the immigration field. Our main channel for information is udi.no.

After you have submitted your application for protection, you will be interviewed by UDI. UDI will make a decision on the basis of all the information you have given to the police and UDI, and the documents you have submitted.

If your application is rejected, you can appeal the decision. The embassy or UDI will then reconsider your case. You must complain before the deadline set out in your decision letter.
